For the last two years, NORTH + NOMAD identified as a hybrid production company / filmmaking team / director duo, and it was always a struggle to succinctly define what exactly it was we were doing, as all of those terms felt limiting.
In the past, we have worked under the old video production model with teams of 20 to 30 people, each with a fixed and finite role; on these types of projects we found the entire crew often spends the bulk of the day scrolling through their iPhones waiting for the Director to order them to do something. To us, everything about this rigid hierarchy feels outdated and inflexible. Not to mention costly and cumbersome.
We’re not interested in this approach to video production and we aren’t merely a directing team; we like to be involved in every stage of a project and wear many other hats. We consciously choose a more nimble, intimate approach. We believe the video production process can be more efficient, cost-effective and streamlined. We blur the lines of traditional production roles and build nimble teams to collectively dig in to solve challenges under a unified vision.
Early in 2017 it struck us to rebrand as a creative content lab. It increasingly became clear that we are most potent when we’re enabled to experiment, create our own systems and simply make things. We very much run our business as a laboratory; the idea of building a safe place and state of mind that’s conducive to experimentation, investigation and observation is of utmost importance to us. We are excited by the possibilities of VR and AR and the tools of the future that will enable creativity to flourish in new, unexpected ways. We believe there’s always room for improvement and the best way to sharpen skills and methods is to run tests and analytically review to see what works and how we can optimize.
We approach new projects as journalists and strategists—we ask question to uncover the story angle and design custom content programs that align with marketing goals and create forward-thinking solutions. We’re always experimenting with storytelling to find new ways to meet our clients’ goals and improve their digital footprint. Brands, agencies and organizations increasingly want to build content tailored for individual platforms, whether it’s a short-form documentary series, a commercial digital campaign, Instagram teasers, still photography, or a 360-degree video. By adjusting our offerings to include all of these services we add more value and be better partners to the clients we serve.
At our core, we are a pair of creatives with a diverse set of skills specializing in branded content and video production. Simon brings years of production experience on set and around the world while my background includes copywriting, producing and creating original social and digital content for major entertainment networks and brands. We have top-notch support from a range of dynamic animators, designers, camera operators, programmers and composers when the work calls for it.
